One of the original counties of Georgia, Effingham County was founded in 1777, and is named after Thomas Howard, the third Earl of Effingham. Howard was best known for resigning his commission as a sign of protest against the war versus the American colonies. Today, Effingham is composed ofseveral communities, including Clyo, Guyton, Meldrim, Rincon, Shawnee, and Springfield, contained within a total area of 483 square miles. Though it is one of the fastest-growing counties in the country, it has managed to retain its charming hometown atmosphere.
